Fields & foliage
Meeniyan Art Gallery

Meeniyan, South Gippsland
March 29th - April 24th, 2023

Sarah Saridis’ oil and acrylic paintings in ‘Fields and foliage’, are works painted outdoors in the South Gippsland landscape where she lives. The colour palettes she sees in nature, the unexpected compositions and changing light are all the elements that inspire her practice. Saridis works intuitively to open up a chance of surprise and energy through brush marks and line, developing her visual language through the immediacy of response to what she sees in the field.

Threaded through these works are passages of light, either working up close to foliage or in the layered topography of the landscape. The element of movement via colour and light in visual planes is what draws her to painting and becomes key in her compositions and focus.

She begins with drawing as a way of exploring and getting familiar with her surroundings; a method to bridge into that creative internal space and find the composition using line and contrasts of light.

Working outdoors has invigorated her painting practice; being still and absorbing the landscape through seeing and hearing nature; birds, the wind and the sensory experience is what she honours and hopes to bring that energy through the work.
